Subjects Taught: Voice, Vocal Coaching, Theory: Rudiments, Piano
As a full-time private music teacher since 2006 and part-time since 1992, my primary focus is teaching vocal technique and coaching repertoire in a wide array of genres, including pop/rock/jazz/gospel, musical theatre, and classical. I also teach piano, ear training, sight reading and music theory rudiments . My role as a music teacher has emerged as a second career. Having completed a B.Sc. in Psychology, I worked in applied fields for a number of years. During that time I enjoyed a variety of performing opportunities which ultimately led to enrolling in, and completing a commercial music diploma in vocal performance. I have been a vocalist in various jazz, blues, and rock combos and my first year after graduating from college was spent on the road in a rock cover band as lead singer and keyboardist. When I returned to Calgary, I sang with the Calgary Opera Company where I discovered a love for the amazing art forms of opera and classical singing. Over the years I have enjoyed solo and small ensemble performances in a variety of genres. A highlight was singing the role of the Mother in “Amahl and the Night Visitors”, directed by Stan Kane. Another has been SATB quartet work, both accompanied and a capella. My most treasured accomplishment to date is my concert, “From a Woman’s Perspective...A Recital of Song and Story”.
