Music and Beyond is a classical music and multi-disciplinary festival that takes place in Ottawa each July. Our mandate is to link music with a wide range of art forms and cultural disciplines. Music and Beyond also places a strong importance on developing new audiences for classical music, particularly young people. Music and Beyond was named “Event of the Year” at the 2018 Ottawa Tourism Awards. In its first ten seasons, Music and Beyond has presented a total of over 900 concerts and events, as well as over 3,800 “mini-concerts”. The festival has presented some of Ottawa, Canada and the world’s greatest musicians, artists, performers and writers.   • In-School Performances

    A major part of Music and Beyond’s mandate is reaching out to young people to introduce them to music and the arts, as well as involving Ottawa’s finest young musicians in transformational performance opportunities. Over the last nine years, young people from local choirs, orchestras, and jazz bands have had the opportunity to perform publicly with world-renowned musicians.Music and Beyond has introduced a Music in School initiative to offer hands-on opportunities and performances for young people in the fall and spring in Ottawa’s elementary and secondary schools.

  • Performances

    Music and Beyond has been offering free socially distanced live mini-concerts throughout the month of August, to local Ottawa communities. This initiative comes from Montréal and is offered by Mécénat-Musica, Ensemble Caprice, the Foundation of Greater Montreal and the Chagnon Foundation. For the Ottawa concerts, they partnered with Music & Beyond. Musicians visit different neighbourhoods each in order to bring music to the community.

Pandemic Initiatives: Virtual Concerts

Music and Beyond is a classical music and arts festival. Each year, the festival offers a variety of programming to highlight exciting connections between classical music and many other art forms. A major aspect of the Music and Beyond mission is to build new audiences for music and the arts, with a special emphasis on providing opportunities for young people in the community.

With the pandemic we had to stop all our in-person concerts, but that didn't stop us from filming exciting content all free of charge and accessible online. 

Some highlights include our virtual festival last summer with themes such as:

Music and Nature: A beautiful blend of music and nature inspired performances thematically organized. What is unique about this series is that it was all filmed in the beautiful Canadian Museum of Nature with the appropriate safety measures in place.

Music and Law: Hosted by The Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin, we related stories of the legal problems of some of history’s greatest composers. A very interesting concept that was very popular amongst our patrons.

Here is the Press Release of our Summer 2020 Virtual Festival 

We also recently hosted The Viennese Winter Ball completely virtual through a Zoom session and a live stream of pre-recorded content. Traditionally this formal event would have taken place at the Shaw Centre, Downtown Ottawa, but because of Covid-19 we had to rethink how we could host this virtually. Again, this event was completely free and all accessible online.

We also, created a series named the Twelve Days of Christmas that we released once a day leading up to Christmas. This content is also available on our YouTube Channel. 

Video Series

In July 2020, Music and Beyond announced an ambitious series of 100 videos to be released throughout the the summer. This includes 50 English and 50 French videos.

A wide range of performers are participating in the videos including violinists Jonathan Crow and Yolanda Bruno; National Ballet of Canada principal dancer Sonia Rodriguez; mezzo- soprano Wallis Giunta; Montreal’s superb Cirque Fantastic; clarinettist Kimball Sykes; trumpeter Karen Donnelly; pianist Frédéric Lacroix; double bass virtuoso Joel Quarrington; organist Matthew Larkin; singer Kellylee Evans; and literally dozens of others. Almost all performances were filmed with the musicians actually performing live together. Each performance was filmed following ministry of health guidelines for social distancing.

The videos will have three different main series: Music and Nature, filmed throughout the Canadian Museum of Nature and offering performances that reflect the exhibits and galleries of the museum; Music and Law hosted by The Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin, who will relate stories of the legal problems of some of history’s great composers; and Music and Circus featuring Montreal’s Cirque Fantastic.
