VUCAVU.com is a uniquely-structured bilingual digital organization in the independent media arts sector. Its purpose is to use the power of collectivity and scale to increase public access and appreciation of independent Canadian film and video art.

VUCAVU is a streaming platform operated by the non-profit Coalition of Canadian Independent Media Art Distributors (CCIMAD).

CCIMAD was established in 2013 by a group of independent Canadian film and video distributors to improve international accessibility to their catalogues through a shared digital distribution strategy. To this end, they established VUCAVU, which works with independent film and video content providers from across the country to improve access to Canadian artwork and to provide greater national and international awareness of Canadian filmmakers and video artists.

VUCAVU offers the following services through its digital distribution platform:

Curated film and video programmes for the public that are often free to the public for a certain period of time
Public access via our account system to preview and rent individual works for online viewing
Access for curators, programmers and other professionals in the field to research artists and view works
Collaborations with educators and librarians to support remote and online learning
Online marketing support to promote Canadian filmmakers and video artists
Online venue rental access for professional presenters with the ability to embed live-streamed elements into the site.
We offer research user account options for two different types of professional researchers in the field: independent curators (or professional presentation buyers) who have a track record of booking works for paid, professional presentation; and academic researchers, who are seeking access to VUCAVU for scholarly reasons.

    VUCAVU is a great place to do research about various types of Canadian visual storytelling and to learn about many independent film and video artists from the last 45-50 years of creation. All trailers are free for anyone to watch and each artist has their own biography page that links to their professional websites.

  • Resources

    In terms of in-class or remoter-learning access to VUCAVU, we have the ability to create curated film and video selections for professors, educators, schools who would like to present certain works in their classes or to students for remote access. These educational pre-selected pages are sold for a temporary access licensing fee. The price is determined by the number and duration of films included and the duration of desired access - for example it can be set for a semester of for a year, depending on your budget etc.

  • Outreach Programs

    This VUCAVU OUTREACH presentations are led by Jacquelyn Hébert, VUCAVU’s Community and Program Manager, and is intended for artists and filmmakers interested in learning about distribution options available for their films and videos. During the session, Jacquelyn discusses digital marketing for film and video, what VUCAVU.com is, what an independent distributor does and what we offer artists. The presentation includes an overview of a few other View-On-Demand (VOD) platforms available to artists and a discussion about how artists can use digital tools to promote their work to broader audiences. In addition to its marketing and streaming functions, we encourage people to utilize digital tools like VUCAVU for curatorial, research, and educational purposes. CURATED PROGRAMMING ON VUCAVU

Since launching our platform in 2017, we have collaborated with curators and programmers from across the country to present film and video programs available for free streaming for a limited time. Each program includes a curatorial essay that explores the curators' selection. All the artists and curators included in these programs receive screening and curatorial fees for their participation. After the free viewing period has expired, we encourage the public to read the essays and rent works individually.
