extile, tactile, colour blending, creating, sculpting - are a few words to describe what a wonderful medium wool fibre is for converting into sculpted flora and fauna - even people! Wanting to avoid the world of painting, Heather has found that playing with various colours of fibres can achieve a water-colour effect by blending and manipulating such a forgiving medium.
Using a combination of dry needle felting (sharp barbed needles that compact wool roving fibres into a fabric or shape) and wet felting (using water, soap, agitation), Heather creates items that often begin with a core wool fleece (non-dyed) and then adds the layers of surface colours to create realistic soft birds or animals. She uses pre-dyed wool roving, fleece, or yarns and has enormous fun with her drum carder blending colours with which to ‘paint’ her creations. Flora, fauna, jewellery, containers, wall art, wearables - the sky is the limit with hand felting!
