About
Ziigimineshin Winnipeg 2020 is the second iteration of the Beadwork Symposia, this one organized by the Manitoba Craft Council (MCC) in partnership with Urban Shaman, Manitoba Museum, Mentoring Artists for Women’s Art. Ziigimineshin is being held in conjunction with the following exhibitions:

-Endurance ….. Patience curated by Daina Warren at Urban Shaman
-Community Beading Table Group Show curated by Niahm Dooley at Mentoring Artists for Women’s Art (MAWA)
-May the Land Remember You as You Walk Upon Its Surface curated by Franchesca Hebert-Spence at the Shirley Richardson Craft Gallery, C2 Centre for Craft (home of the MCC)

The first Beadwork Symposium: Manidoominensagemin (We are beading) Toronto 2019, was held at the Canada Textile Museum in conjunction with Beads, they’re sewn so tight curated by Lisa Myers. The Beadwork Symposia are intended to contribute to and build on the scholarship around contemporary Indigenous art with a focus on how beadwork builds community; through making and learning together, opportunities will be created for the exchange of knowledge and the building of community.

Speakers
Speakers will include Judy Anderson, Katherine Boyer, the Brandon Beading Babes, Ruth Cuthand, Dr. Sherry Farrell Racette, Cathy Mattes, Paige Mukash, Lisa Myers, Margaret Nazon, Dr. Carmen Robertson, Amber Sandy, Tuscarora Beading Group and Dr. Ukjese Van Kampen. Keynote will be presented by Dr. Jolene Rickard.

Collection and Gallery Visits
Site visits to view beading collections and exhibitions at the Manitoba Crafts Museum and Library, University of Winnipeg, Winnipeg Art Gallery, Manitoba Museum, Manitoba Metis Federation, Urban Shaman, Manitoba Craft Council, and MAWA will be part of the Symposium programme.

Registration
Registration for Ziigmineshin costs $150 and includes breakfasts and lunches, as well as a pass to the Manitoba Museum. To register for the Symposium, please go < https://c2centreforcraft.ca/beading-symposium-regular-registration/>. Please note: tickets cannot be refunded after January 1st, 2020.

Community Programming
Activities in Manitoba Museum’s Alloway Hall will include community beading tables and beading vendors from across Canada. Programming in Alloway Hall will be free and open to the public.
