Zuppa theatre has a collection of innovative shows that we created during the lockdown with community and school partnerships!
Below are blurbs about us and those shows as well as some trailers/links to the performances!
About Zuppa:
Zuppa Theatre aims to make extraordinary experiences that provoke the consideration of new perspectives and ideas. We prioritize questions over answers, and the discovery of possibility over the depiction of what is. This compels us to experiment with new forms and grapple with relevant questions of our time. We attempt to do this as generously as possible and have developed a unique collaborative process that favours the intuitive over the formulaic and thrives on the play between the imagined and the real.
Prior to Covid, Zuppa had been exploring digital app-based works. Below are 4 examples of shows we created/adapted during the pandemic in partnership with the community or schools.
VISTA20
Vista20 is a 30-minute app-guided walking tour that can be done anywhere, anytime. You will need a smartphone (or tablet) and a set of headphones. It was created for The Mayworks festival of Working People and the Arts. Think of it as a short stroll during which you run into seven interesting people working in public health in Halifax during the COVID-19 crisis. It is an archive of their testimonies from April/May 2020. Access Vista20 here. It is best experienced on a smartphone.
LABOUR7
Labour7 is a 40-minute app-guided walking tour that can be done anywhere, anytime. Think of it as a short stroll during which you run into seven interesting people working in Nova Scotia during the COVID-19 crisis. It is also an archive of their testimonies from August 2020. Access Labour7 here. It is best experienced on a smartphone.
Pop-Up Love Party (Online) - a Zoom performance for 1st year University Students
Pop-Up Love Party reimagines Plato’s Symposium in its quest to define love with all its plagues and pleasures by employing aerobics, holding a kangaroo court, exposing audience passion, and pumping out an infectious pop ballad that will mend broken hearts around the world. Alongside public shows and tours, Zuppa has performed Pop-Up Party annually for the University of King's College first year students since 2016. This year we revamped the show into an interactive zoom performance. Here's the video to the Pop-Up Love Party (online) trailer. We've added an additional public show Friday, June 11th @ 9:00 PM ADT. Pay-What-you-can tickets here!
From Halifax West with Love
Zuppa Theatre guided a grade 11/12 Drama class at Halifax West High School through the process of creating an original app-guided ''walkumentary.' Based entirely on the students' interests and ideas, the result is a surprising and quirky collection of deeply personal testimonials and flights of fancy. It allowed Zuppa to experiment with a model of collaboration in which the company provides a structure that others fill with their own content. Due to student privacy requirements, this work isn't available to the public.
