This annual winter event brings four youth fiddle ensembles together on Vancouver Island, BC, for four days of coaching, mentoring, and performance. Participating ensembles have included the North Shore Celtic Ensemble (North Vancouver), Yukon Fiddleheads (Whitehorse), Coastline (Victoria), Bow Valley Fiddlers (Calgary), and the host ensemble Fiddelium (Nanaimo). Each ensemble director submits one tune arrangement or medley from their group's active performance repertoire which will be shared between the four ensembles. Participants are expected to learn their parts prior to arriving at the Summit, where the participants are broken into small groups that receive detailed coaching from each of the four directors. These shared pieces form the backbone of the gala performance, which also includes a 20-minutes showcase for each of the participating ensembles. Each participating ensemble also receives two performance coaching sessions with the director of another group. The West Coast Youth Fiddle Summit is a great way to build connections between youth musicians, and it also a fabulous community builder for the participating ensemble coaches.
