In the winter of 2021, sixteen high school singers from ten British Columbia high schools met and rehearsed online to create a virtual choir performance as the main project undertaking for the Mira Youth Mentorship, an annual community youth engagement program offered to young singers throughout the province by Elektra. The song, O Sister, Keep Us Steady Through the Storm, was recorded by each participant on their phones and compiled by Elektra for a digital performance, launched on March 10, 2021. This piece by Canadian composer Kathleen Allan, was commissioned by Amanda Weber in 2016 for Voices of Hope, the women’s prison choir in Shakopee, Minnesota to perform together with the University of Minnesota Women’s Chorus. The poem was developed from ideas suggested by the Voices of Hope singers. In the words of Amanda Weber, “When other choirs perform this piece, it is as if the voices of incarcerated women are finally able to be heard beyond the fence.”
