Johnny MacRae

Johnny MacRae is a spoken word poet and arts educator based on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh peoples. A former regional and national poetry slam champion, he has offered over 200 performances of collaborative and solo works at readings and slams, as well as poetry, music and theatre festivals across Canada and the United States. He twice attended the Spoken Word residency at the Banff Centre, where he learned from some of the world's most accomplished spoken word artists. MacRae is one of Canadian spoken word's most active collaborators - a member of "spoken weird" duo 2 Dope Boys in a Cadillac, its musical spinoff Cadillac Mountain Orchestra, and the experimental trio Travelin' Word Circus - and he loves to explore the power and fun of collaborative poetry with students. Since 2010, he has taught over 300 workshops around BC and Canada. A founding member of Vancouver Island's Raising Voices program, MacRae was also a member of Vancouver-based WordPlay Poets for 10 years, co-directed the Hullabaloo Youth Festival for 6 years, and has been a five-time instructor at the Alberta Writers' Guild's WordsWorth Summer Youth Residency. He organized Canada's first ever spoken word youth residency, Word Camp, and has led numerous residencies through the ArtStarts Artist in the Classroom program. An energetic and enthusiastic instructor, MacRae has presented everywhere from Vancouver's most populous high schools to tiny elementary schools in Alert Bay.
